Located on Lake Union’s south end, this neighborhood is at the center of an ambitious redevelopment plan. Home to an established biotech and life sciences community, including the Fred Hutchinson and the UW Medical Research Centers, South Lake Union continues to add a variety of new businesses. Amazon.com is one of the newest corporate residents as of 2010.
The neighborhood also includes cafés and restaurants, markets, shops, galleries and a hotel. New residential projects offer lofts, apartments and condos, many featuring “green” innovations for healthier living. Streetcars headed downtown leave every 15 minutes. A new 12-acre lakefront park opened in 2010. The Center for Wooden Boats, a neighborhood treasure, provides rentals, classes and hands-on experiences for would-be sailors. South Lake Union’s southwestern corner is bordered by Seattle Center, historic site of the Century 21 World’s Fair, currently a city park with museum attractions and home to the iconic Space Needle.
The South Lake Union Discovery Center hosts annual events like the South Lake Union Block Party in August. The Center, open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. is packed with neighborhood information.
